Osteotomy procedures around the knee can alter the biomechanical axis of the knee, thereby shifting the load from one compartment to another. This can be used to unload an arthritic painful compartment or to decrease the weight experienced by a cartilage restoration procedure. Recent clinical and biomechanical studies have emphasized the importance of correcting the weight bearing axis in a cartilage restoration procedure and to avoid rapid progression of osteoarthritis.1,2
